Rehoming Committee
Save Our Roos!
THE PROBLEM
The need for rehoming roosters is growing at a rapid pace, alongside the growth of new backyard poultry enthusiasts. Even the most experienced chicken owners have seen roosters who can be loud, unable to integrate with their flock, and aggressive towards other birds or humans. While roosters themselves can sometimes present the challenge, the issue is exacerbated by owners being uncertain of how to handle the behavior and special needs of roosters.
THE MISSION
THE PROGRAM
Our “Rest My Roo” program includes:
Free Posting
There is no cost associated with posting your poultry for rehoming on MadHatchers. We know that the perfect home for your feathered friends is out there, but it will require some work to make that match happen.
To provide additional support, our community support team is eager to work with all rooster rehomers to gather and provide enough information on your rooster to match them with the best home. Our team has developed a list of tips and tricks that can increase exposure on your rooster’s listing.
Training
All poultry owners are new at one point, and we know the challenges that come with establishing your flock. Because of the wisdom that comes with experience, our program aims to connect local specialists with flock owners in need of advice. Our team hopes that improving access to mentors and trainers will allow new flock owners to feel they are not alone in their journey, and be able to make more educated decisions.
Therapy Roo
We are currently partnering with programs that will accept a small or friendly rooster to work with them on their own wellness goals. Roosters that are small and of friendly temperament are ideal to support wellness-related therapy programs, helping people in need of a pet, friend, or general companion.
This therapy program has an approval process and can only accept roosters who are deemed safe and family-friendly by a handler.
Rest Acreage
The ultimate goal of our program is to find roosters a permanent home. In an effort to do this, we connect with public and private sanctuaries which can take in neutral-tempered poultry. These homes are often open-range environments where roosters are allowed to live their lives in freedom with other roosters from similar situations. Our “Rest Acreage” program has designated caretakers who provide oversight and management in these locations.
WE NEED YOUR HELP!
Mental Wellness Programs
MadHatchers is connecting with non-profit organizations and groups that support people who have special medical or mental health needs, such as Autism. Evidence proves that animals can help ease symptoms of stress and anxiety, and improve the quality of life for individuals who could benefit from a companion. Chickens and friendly roosters of a great temperament can support these programs.
Shelters
We encourage and support individuals who have regularly maintained and monitored land to be a part of this fostering. The individuals who provide homes for roosters with nowhere else to go allow them to live out their lives happy and free.
Caretakers
Caretakers can provide an extra helping hand for poultry owners who are overwhelmed with to-dos. This can involve checking in on sanctuary locations to see poultry conditions, coordinating and conducting drop-offs to new homes or sanctuaries, vet transport, or other similar tasks.
Operators/Admins
Volunteers and committee members who want to sign up for intake support when a rooster or chicken is in immediate need or is found in a crisis situation are incredibly important. These roosters are in desperate need of a quick solution that can get them out of sticky situations and find them a place to call home.
Once a MadHatchers member has posted their rooster for rehoming, we will reach out to our Rehoming Committee Members to find the right home for them, based on your resources and willingness to support. There is no obligation to take a rooster in, but we ask that you consider the ability to before signing up as a Rehoming Committee Member.
